what university should you choose?

selecting the right UK university can be daunting for students. there is a multitude of advice out in cyberspace, but much of it is conflicting. these articles examines the viewpoints of three students that have just completed a BA honours course, all at different universities and all studying different courses. two of the student achieved 2:1 whilst the third was awarded first class honours. the common factors that the student considered to be important have been listed and summarised.

choosing the right university-location,location,location!
the first decision to make is betwen town and city. its a myth that rural students are daunted by the big city or bright lights, in exactly the same way that students from inner cities are not comfortable in universities in market town. it is personal choice and selecting the right environment that most appeals is the first box to thick. next come geographical location.inland or beach? remote or easily accessible? on a motorway and main rail line or tucked away in a corner of the mainland? again, personal preference is the key, but decision should be reached after factoring in all the necesities including travel back to the students home.

picking the universities-the important is UCAS points
ambition is a great thing and when coupled with the great confidence can often lead to potential students over-reaching when completing the UCAS form. the general filing was to reach for the stars with thefirst choice but play safe on option two.ensuring that the required points total is passed comfortably.

selecting the right university-choose the correct course
just as in J.K.Rowling's world of wizardy, the university can choose the student like wand chooses a wizard.
often a course is only available in a select few university thereby narrowing the parameters  of the student's search. if having studied all the university that provide the course the student wishes to study. the student is not impressed with the university available, then rethink on the course is worth considering.

What universitiey is right for you?
web galleries, brochures and virtual tours are fine but there is no subtitute for putting feet on the ground and visiting the university that you are considering. the vast majority of university have open days for potential students and certainly the top two on your list, at the very least should be vissited before commiting. there invariably are q&a sessions with current students. so use  the time wisely andprepare any question you have in advance but dont be afraid to ask something that comes to you in a very last minutes.

A university education-enjoy!
all three of the students that helpedwith this articles agreed in one thing. the time flew by and they enjoyed every minute of it.

How to keep your sanity while applying to grad school

applying to graduate school is no small ordeal.the apllication processis time consuming and can be frustrating. between researching schools, taking entrance exams, linning up letters of reccomendations, filling out forms, and writing admissions essay or personal statements, you might start to feel like less than your best self. here are some ways to stay on top of that application.

eye on the prize
when you find yourself overwhelmed or frustrated byyour applications, take a minute or two to remember why you wanted to apply in the first place. this will help you keep perspective and remember that all your hard work will pay off! just imagine that soon enough, you will be entering a new master or doctoral program, being exposed to new people and ideas, and that much closer to your long-term goals.

commiserate with others in the same boats
make sure to connect with people who are also applying to graduate school, whether or not in the same field. it can be reassuring and cathartic to know that others are having similar experience, and you are not the only one jumping these hoops. if you do not know peoples in your social circle that are also applying to graduate programs, the internet is a good resource, since there are many blogs and forums built arounds these very topics. the creative writing MFA blog is one such example, and the gradcafe forum has an entire section devoted to the application procces.

but do your own thing
commiserating with other graduate school aplicantsis usefull in moderation, but too much of it might exacerbate your own stress.anxiety can be contagious, so dont be afraid to take some space whaen you need it. ultimately these are your application, and your future.just do your best and let that be enough.

The waiting game
how you will spend your time while you wait to hear back from graduate programs? in the weeks or months before admissions decissions, you will need an outlet for your energy-something to distract you, lest you start checking your mailbox in your sleep,or turning the magic 8-ball to try to divine where you will be accepted. this is an ideal time to do something you've always wanted to do. learn spanish, declutter your abode, take up yoga, go on vacation, whatever you do take advantage of this last few months- soon enough you will be busy graduate student.
